Shun against whom proceedings were principally directed, had lately absconded from Haokong -from- other sources I heard that he fled to Hong Kong - but that his paternal

uncle Chun Chen had been arrested and conducted to Canton. On being examined, Chun Chen had deposed, that Chun Shun,

his

of Naokong I distinelly, called the attention of the District Magistrate to the fact, that the firm of Vogel Hagedorn & be had no claim whalever against Chum Chen, the unde, and that the latter could

not be imprisoned according to

German law, but the Magistrate designated Chum Chen responsible :s paternal uncle according to Chinese Custom, an

expression encaning, as far as I understand, that the uncle was res

responsible for the appearance of his nephew Chun shun, before the magistrate. I acknowledged the principle, that

the

question whether the Chinese Authorities were authorized in

the Chinese subject.

Chun Chen or not, had to be- decided by themselves according to Chiese law and custom, but I let him know, that the primer

was not detained at my instance.
